Thanos, as portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), particularly in Avengers: Endgame, is a powerful Titanian warlord driven by a singular, devastating purpose: to bring balance to the universe.
Believing that unchecked population growth inevitably leads to resource depletion and societal collapse, he sought to collect all six Infinity Stones. With these stones, he would wield the power to erase half of all life in the universe with a single snap of his fingers.
His first appearance in the MCU was a brief cameo in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers (2012). This appearance was a setup for a decade long arc which culminated in his role as the primary antagonist in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In those movies, he was portrayed by Josh Brolin.
Thanos proved to be a formidable foe, overwhelming many of the Avengers and successfully executing his plan in Avengers: Infinity War. However, his victory was ultimately short-lived, as the surviving Avengers regrouped and, through time travel, managed to undo his actions and defeat him in Avengers: Endgame, restoring balance to the universe in a way he never intended.
